It is a typical image from the 1970s (1977), the period of the Cold War and the nuclear threat. A horse is often depicted as a muscular and heroic animal. That is not the case here at all. Horse, rider and child are deformed, worn out, hang together in tatters and holes are visible. But the attitude is expressive and expresses a hopeless situation. 'Horse and Rider' is a symbol for the existential anguish of modern man, as depicted in Picasso's famous painting 'Guernica'. The horse draws attention to itself, it is the expression of total despair. Horse and Rider is one of Jan Calmeyn's early works. Later his images evolve in the direction of abstraction.

The statue is made of pieces of wax that are melted together. This operation must be carried out in a cool room to maintain the desired shape. The patches and seams have remained clearly visible, which emphasizes the unnatural, artificial nature of this sculpture. The classic modeling and molding is not applied here. This technique is very common for small formats, but rather exceptional for larger dimensions, such as this one.

Jan Calmeyn carves his first works directly from stone. Afterwards he prefers modeling in clay. He makes polyester casts of his designs, which he patinas in a silver or metallic color. From 1975 he had his designs modeled in wax cast in bronze using the lost wax technique, because the options for using polyester are too limited.

The sculpture is made of wax strips that are melted together. This operation must be carried out in a cool room to maintain the desired shape.
