In my opinion, a beautiful old sailor's church in which a visit should not be missed. Parking lots are plentiful. And the visit should be rounded off with a tour of Sønderho

Sønderho Church was built in 1782 and is unique in its architectural style. It was built as a narrow nave with a built-in transept, entirely in keeping with local traditions. "Oriels" were gradually added as the population grew. Since the parish was at its largest in terms of population towards the end of the 18th century, and according to tradition, there should be room for all the adults in the congregation to attend services, the oriels were incorporated into the church's floor plan. As a result, the church's floor plan became almost square.

The church's old furnishings, a 13th-century baptismal font, the altar from 1717, a gallery for the "poor and foreign rabble," the pulpit from 1661—supposedly from the Hospital Church in Ribe—and the confessional were adapted and installed in the new church. Since the focus of the service

by then had shifted from altar service to the proclamation of God's Word, the pulpit was placed approximately in the middle of the south side.

The church was shaped like a hall church.

Lighting was provided by tallow candles in many brass candlesticks, gifts from sailors

over the years. It wasn't until 1932 that the church, like the rest of the village, received electricity.

From the village's own power plant, incidentally. All this inventory is still there today

in the large church, which can accommodate 450 people. And that's how many are there

every Christmas Eve, even though the permanent population today is only about 340.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the church inherited the used pews

from Ribe Cathedral; it is in a style that could be described as neo-Gothic.

Fifteen ships now hang from the low wooden ceilings. A frigate that sailed in 200 years ago and was found on the beach is the church's only warship.

Only a few of the others, all merchant ships, with the exception of a lifeboat and a lightship, are actual model ships. Most were carved by sailors from memory and donated to the church. They all demonstrate the connection between the sailors and their church as it has been over time.
