In 1862/63, district administrator Georg Freiherr von Eerde had a representative, free-standing, two-storey brick villa with a hipped roof built on the site of a probably never-completed bastion of the extended fortress area. On the east side there is a four-storey square staircase tower on the left, a bay window with a balcony and a single-storey round tower on the right. The west-facing side accommodates the door flanked by small turrets, to which a double flight of stairs leads. The villa, with battlements and turrets supported by round arches, was built in the English Tudor style on the imaginary model of a castle. The design for this extremely high-quality building probably goes back to the Cologne master builder and later royal building officer Vinzenz Stadt (1819-1898).

In 1894 the district of Geldern took over the villa. Since 1985, the old villa, the "red house" and the former district office have served as the city hall of Geldern, and the kitchen building as a repository for the city archive. By 1989, extensive restoration and preparation for meeting purposes on the mezzanine floor and faction rooms on the upper floor followed, and the entire attic space was braced. The front door was renewed in 1996 according to the old pattern. In the summer of 1998, all 71 windows were replaced with new ones that were listed as historical monuments and based on the old model.
