In 1518, Emperor Maximilian I left Augsburg for good and said goodbye to the imperial city in bad health. This is commemorated by the equestrian statue on the corner of Annastrasse and Steingasse, which depicts the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire on horseback. His parting words are immortalized under the stone sculpture: "God bless you now, dear Augsburg and all the pious citizens within! We have indeed had many happy courage in you. Now we won't see you anymore."
