The Fuente de Neptuno (Neptune Fountain) is a famous neoclassical monument on the Plaza de Cánovas del Castillo in the heart of Madrid. Designed in the late 18th century by Ventura Rodríguez, the fountain depicts the sea god Neptune on a chariot pulled by shells and seahorses. Today, the fountain is not only an architectural highlight of the grand Paseo del Prado boulevard but also the traditional place where the football club Atlético Madrid celebrates its titles.

In Roman mythology, NEPTUNE, who was honored with a fountain here in the Spanish capital, is the god of the sea; his Greek counterpart is POSEIDON. Both are usually depicted with a trident - in paintings or as statues - which is their common trademark, so to speak. In contrast to his Greek "counterpart", a planet is named after NEPTUNE.
