Since 1955, the tram network in Hamburg was dismantled until October 1, 1978, when line 2, which ran through Niendorf, was the last line to be closed. As a replacement for the tram, the construction of a subway line was required in Niendorf.

Almost a year after the tram was switched to bus operation, construction of the subway began on July 7, 1979. At the same time, it was decided that Niendorf Markt should not be the terminus of the extension, but that the subway should be extended through a second construction phase to the New development areas should be extended from Niendorf-Nord.

On November 5, 1984, a museum car with politicians and press people arrived at the Niendorf Markt underground station. The train was pulled by a diesel locomotive as the line had not yet been electrified. The public release took place on June 1, 1985. The completion of the second construction phase after Niendorf Nord lasted until March 9, 1991, so that Niendorf Markt was the northern terminus of the U2 for almost six years.

The Niendorf Markt station was built under the Tibarg, a street in the center of Niendorf that was converted into a pedestrian zone during the construction of the subway.

The station has a central platform with three entrances.

The entrances are located in this pedestrian zone at both ends of the station.

There is also an elevator in the southern third of the station, making the station barrier-free.

There was a tram in Hamburg until October 1, 1978.

The extensive network was gradually phased out starting in 1955.

On October 1, 1978, Line 2 was the last line to be replaced.

It was initially replaced by Bus 102.

In the long term, however, the construction of a subway from Stephansplatz via Hoheluft and Lokstedt

to Niendorf was planned. The Niendorf public was outraged by this transport policy and immediately demanded that it be replaced by a subway.

The city stuck to its bus conversion, but promised Niendorf residents a subway as soon as possible. Of course, it was to be built as cost-effectively as possible.

But that wasn't possible with the original route to Stephansplatz.

And so a connection to Hagenbeck came into play.

Construction began in the summer of July 7, 1979.

Completion of the second construction phase to Niendorf Nord took until March 9, 1991, making Niendorf Markt the northern terminus of the U2 line for almost six years.

The subway station Niendorf Markt is approached every 5 minutes during the day (except Sundays), whereby at times every second train towards the city center ends or starts here; Only during rush hour do the trains run every five minutes to the Niendorf Nord terminus. At all other times, the station is served every 10 or 20 minutes. The U2 runs every 20 minutes during the night from Friday to Saturday and before Sundays and public holidays.

At the bus station there is a transition to the Metrobus lines 23 (via Groß Borstel to Billstedt), 24 (via Langenhorn to Rahlstedt) and 5 (to Schnelsen or on the route of the former tram via Lokstedt to downtown Hamburg). There is also a connection to the city bus lines 191 (to Schnelsen Nord or through the Krohnstieg tunnel to Garstedt) and 391 (to Hagenbecks Tierpark) as well as to the night bus line 604 (to Niendorf Ost or on the route of line 5 to the Rathausmarkt).
