The statue of King Bhupatindra Malla (1674-1722) stands in front of the Sundhoka Portal on a monolith. It was erected posthumously by his son King Ranjit Malla, while the corresponding pillars in Kathmandu and Patan were decorated with the images of the living rulers.
Such pillars with statues of kings have so far only existed in Kathmandu and Patan. Only with the knowledge of the craftsmen from Kathmandu and the permission of King Jayaprakasha was it possible to erect such a monolith in Bhaktapur.
