The Degutale or Degu Taleju Temple was first built in the late 16th or early 17th century by King Shiva Simha Malla in honour of Taleju, the patron goddess of the Malla kings. The building was destroyed several times through fire and earthquakes and rebuilt but giving it a different shape of the roof.

The main body of the temple has been particularly susceptible to earthquake damage, sustaining damage in several 19th century temblors. In the 1934 earthquake, the entire structure collapsed but was quickly rebuilt along the lines of its former layout. Further renovation took place in 1969. In 2015, the April earthquake wracked the structure, though it remained standing. As of 2020, the monument is partially restored, though considerable cracks and loose brickwork remain evident on the upper levels.
