On the banks of the Holy Bagmati River in Kathmandu lies the great temple and cremation site of Pashupatinath. Here you can experience Hindu cremation ceremonies and encounters with sadhus (wandering monks who live asceticism) up close. I recommend that you take a local guide who can give you a lot of interesting details and facts about Pashupatinath and Hinduism in general. The entrance fee for tourists is 1000 Nepalese rupees.

Pashupatinath is the biggest temple of lord Shiva in the world. Hindus in Nepal celebrate "Maha Shivaratri" the "Night of Lord Shiva" in the Pashupatinath temple every year.  Unlike other festivals, Maha Shivaratri begins at midnight and continues throughout the day. Worshippers of Lord Shiva stay up all night and smoke marijuana as Shiva is believed to be an avid smoker and marijuana smoking on this day is called taking ‘Shiva Buti’. Law in Nepal sort of turns a blind eye on this day!! Devotees and visitors chant “Om Namah Shivaya” and perform "Vedic" and "Tantric" worship and "Tandav" dance of Lord Shiva all night and pray for protection from darkness 🙏.
Don't forget to witness evening "Aarati" everyday on the bank of holy river Bagmati. It is free for everyone.

The actual temple complex is only accessible to Hindus, while the outer temple area is also accessible to everyone else.
The largest temple festival takes place in Kathmandu in February/March, during which time the religious Hindu holiday "Shivaratri" takes place, which commemorates the worship of the deity Shiva. Tens of thousands of Hindus flock to the capital Kathmandu from both remote regions of Nepal and neighboring countries.
