Various weirs and locks are located in the Havel arms, lock canal, Rathenower Havel, weir arm Hinterarche, weir arm Vorderarche, secondary arm Hellers Loch and Stadtkanal. Together, they form the Rathenow barrage. From 1548 to 1559, a boiler lock was built in Rathenow, thus guaranteeing a continuous passage for shipping. At the same location, the first city lock was built in 1732 as a chamber lock. The lock had wooden gates until 1977.
