At some point, directly after the founding of the city of Osnabrück by Charlemagne in 780 AD, a Carolingian Michaelis chapel was built on the Gertrudenberg, which suggests that a pre-Christian Saxon sanctuary was previously located on this site. Remains of walls in today's tower of Gertrude's Church and bricked-up round-arched windows in the south wall of the church are said to come from the Michaeliskapelle.

Gertrudenberg Church: The monastery church of St. Gertrud on the Gertrudenberg dates back to the 13th century. It is built in the Romanesque style. A previous building from the beginning of the 12th century can still be seen in the area of the tower, as can parts of the cloister.

Gothic windows were installed in the church in the 15th century during a renovation. The interior features the only baroque high altar in Osnabrück churches.
