It was founded in the first half of the 12th century and existed until 1803.
The former abbey grounds now house the Osnabrück State Hospital, which was privatized in 2007.
The former abbess's house and the abbey church with its Baroque high altar, St. Gertrude's Church, have been preserved. It is used by both Catholic and Protestant congregations.
