The Turnhout beguinage is one of the Flemish beguinages that were included on the World Heritage List in 1998.
No exact date of foundation of the Turnhout beguinage is known, but it was probably founded in the 13th century.
The early classical gatehouse and the elongated tree-lined square characterize this beguinage. There is a well-preserved baroque church, infirmary and houses from the 16th and 17th centuries.
The last beguine, Grand Miss Anna De Boer, died in 2002.
There is a museum where you can learn more about the beguine culture. In 2022 it became known that the gatehouse will be renovated.
