Lorenz Heintz or "Lenze" was a well-known shepherd in Bodenbach and the surrounding area who also produced potash on his property.

Shepherd Lorenz Heintz was born in this house in 1767. He made a name for himself as the rescuer of the Bodenbach flock of sheep from the French and as the founder of the seven footfalls on Kollengasse (Station 20). The shepherd was also a successful potash producer. Potash (potassium carbonate, K2CO3) was used to make soap (detergent), glass and medicines. To do this, wood ash was leached out in vats with sieve bottoms until the solution contained 25 to 30 percent salt. The lye was evaporated in "pots" (cauldrons) and the raw potash was purified by heating it in a calcination furnace. Such a potash cauldron can be seen in the garden of Lorenz Heintz, who was also called "Pottäschlenz".
