Tips

  • Sebastian Kowalke

The almost 700 meters high Ernstberg is not only the highest volcano in the Western Eifel, but also the second highest mountain in the Eifel - only the Hohe Acht is a little higher. The summit is densely forested and offers no view, but still worth a hike up. The mountain slopes are dotted with exciting rock formations that tower out of the forest floor. In combination with the huge beeches here comes a primeval mood.

Around the summit beautiful hiking trails lead through the forest, which are also popular with mountain bike riders.

  • Interesting moss-clad rock formations. Inaccessible, but still recognizable cave entrances from times of basalt stone mining.
If the trees have no leaves, a view is also possible from the flat top.

  • Really mystical place that one would not have expected on the wooded summit of the Ernstberg. We were all alone on the 699.80 meters.
