The oldest part, the Qudratian choir made of fieldstone, dates from the 13th century. The nave and the tower were built from 1885 to 1889 and designed according to the taste of the time neo-Gothic in brick

Inside the church there is an altarpiece from 1695 with carvings. In the main field, an oval painting was placed in 1885 showing the crucifixion scene. The pulpit is also from the year 1695. The pulpit basket is decorated with twisted columns and carved figures of the evangelists. Above the triumphal arch is a group of crucifixes from the beginning of the 16th century. The votive tablets of the Ratzeburgwer Domdechanten Hartwich von Bülow from 1637 are a work of the Baroque sculptor Gebhard Jürgen Titge.

The village was first mentioned in 1158 in the Ratzeburg tithe register. A first church building is documented in 1260. The late Romanesque field stone choir with the typical three-window group and the gable triangle adorned with panels still heralds it. By 1885 the old church had become so dilapidated that everything except the choir was demolished and a new building made of brick in neo-Gothic style was added to the old choir under the direction of the builder RICKMANN. The church was built on a cross-shaped floor plan with a west tower with a pointed helmet, whereby the gables of the side aisles received a panel decoration similar to the east gable. The choir was also given a northern sacristy.
Neo-Gothic style elements adorn the building: buttresses, pilaster strips, cloverleaf arch and four-pass friezes, large dazzling rosettes and applied pointed arches.
The choir is covered with an eight-part vault with a unique keystone. The nave has a star-shaped vault.
The interior furnishings and decoration were renewed during the construction period, the baroque altarpiece with a large round picture of the crucifixion and fully plastic figures, the likewise baroque pulpit with sound cover and evangelist reliefs on the basket and a medieval triumphal cross group with a tree of life motif and evangelist symbols were taken from the old church.
The organ with a three-part prospectus from 1888 comes from Friedrich Friese (III).
In 1988/89 the church was extensively renovated.
In the meantime, a solar system has also been installed on the roof.
      The churchyard is green.
A large cemetery is located in Schönberger Straße at the northern entrance to the town, there is a modern mourning hall.
In the south-east of the church, under a memorial oak, stands the war memorial for those who fell in the Franco-German War of 1871. The war memorial for those who died in the First World War is in a central square in the center of the village.
