The Saale rises in the Fichtel Mountains in Upper Franconia near the town of Zell at an altitude of 728 m above sea level. It has a catchment area of approximately 23,770 km² (including the Unstrut River). After a length of 413 km, it flows into the Elbe near Barby at 49.5 m above sea level at Elbe kilometer 291. The Schwarza, Ilm, Unstrut, Wipper, and Bode are among the most important tributaries on the left, while the Orla and White Elster are on the right.
