As its name suggests, the Old Settler's Cemetery was created as a burial ground for some of Charlotte's early settlers, buried before the city was founded in 1768. The cemetery was established adjacent to the town's early non-denominational church, the present site of the First Presbyterian Church. The Old Settler's Cemetery was burial for more than 100 years until its successor, Historic Elmwood Cemetery, was laid out. Today, the cemetery is a green space between churches and skyscrapers and a constant reminder of our city's history. Many of Charlotte's early and prominent families are buried in Old Settler's Cemetery. Many of the old tombstones are still surprisingly well preserved, while others are faded or partially destroyed.
