Independence Square refers to the declaration of freemdom from Great Britain by the people of Mecklenburg county by signing the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence on the morning of 20 May 1775. This preceded the national declaration by more than a year. The signing act took place in a rustic backwoods courthourse which stood nearby in the center of the interaction of Trade and Tyroon Street. The square features four large sculptures crafted in 1995 by artist Raymond Kaskey. They are said to represent transportation, commerce, industry and the future. The statues are made of bronze and granite and weigh at about 5,000 pounds each. Visitors to Charlotte will find themselves in the midst of a busy intersection if they try to view all four statues at once. Luckily, this pedestrian friendly city has plenty of sidewalks so that each of the statues can be individually admired.
