The statue was created by Kalundborg sculptor Erik Varming and inaugurated in 1997.
Esbern Snare lived from 1127 to 1204. He was the brother of Absalon, the founder of Copenhagen, and the foster brother of King Valdemar the Great. He built Vestborgen in Kalundborg and probably started building the 5-tower church.
The statue consists of stones from almost all over the world.
Esbern Snare stands on a ashlar foundation made of raw granite, which imitates the outline of the Church of Our Lady (cross).
