The coal washer separates the raw coal from the co-mined rock and then classifies it into the many product sizes that leave the mine at the end of the process.

The Ruhr Museum building, the former coal washing plant, is 90 meters long, 30 meters wide and 45 meters high and is the largest building in the Zollverein colliery. In operation, it was a large machine that served to sort, classify, temporarily store and distribute the hard coal.

The coal was not washed here, but the extracted mixture of coal and rock was separated. The coal is later processed into coke in the coking plant.
