The Dutch East India Company, founded in 1602, was the first public limited company (with capital divided into shares), the first multinational and for a long time the largest trading company in the world. After the Amsterdam Chamber, the Zeeland Chamber was the most important 'department' of this colossus. The Zeeland VOC offices and the VOC shipyard were located in Middelburg.
