In the 12th century, around 1050–1200, the St. Petri Church was built on a hill at the intersection of two main routes. The church may be the successor of a wooden church, which was probably on the Grönshoy (Danish for green hill).

St. Peter's Church is a remarkable Romanesque fieldstone church in the Stenderup district of the municipality of Sieverstedt. It was built in the 12th century in Stenthorp on a hill at the intersection of the Oxen Trail and a main west-east road.

During the major renovation in 1961, overpaintings were removed and the original paintings were preserved using modern methods. Remains of even older paintings were discovered underneath, which are no longer easy to interpret.

The old high altar was replaced by a new altar with a natural stone slab and brass cross, which stands slightly higher.
