The fields and pastures behind the sea dyke were converted into a water-rich nature reserve in 2007, which is managed by the State Forestry Administration "Staatsbosbeheer". Because of its unique location - close to the sea and at the westernmost point of Walcheren - it is an attraction for breeding birds such as ducks, geese, coots, great crested grebes and ringed plovers, but also for winter visitors such as teal, widgeon and shoveler as well as various types of geese. Migratory birds such as starlings, wagtails and several species of plovers can also be observed here when they recharge their batteries for the continuation of their journey in the Noordervroon.

Rare birds are also regularly spotted here, such as the resident swift in spring or a group of flamingos in July.
