Carmen Sylva maintains a somewhat mysterious air for most of the year. Royal guests would still feel at home on the covered veranda overlooking the sea. Only in the summer, that is, because the villa was built as a summer house: no cavity walls and no heating. The house has a Mediterranean feel, partly due to its use of color.

Today's Domburg still retains some of that old splendour, despite the tourists who flood the town every summer. Examples of this are the bath hotel, which was remodeled at the end of the 20th century, and the bathing pavilion, which was renovated in 2007.
More expressive and authentic is Villa Carmen Sylva, which nestles against the dunes. In 2001, this summer house - a national monument - was thoroughly restored. The German Cologne magnate Aldenbrück von Brühl had the twelve-room house built in 1885 and in the years that followed. He thought Villa Maria was an appropriate name. A few years later he sold the house to his compatriot Erbschloe. After Queen Elizabeth of Romania stayed there, he named the villa Carmen Sylva, after the pseudonym of this Romanian poet queen.
