The first quarries around the mountain were already being built before the 20th century. From them one can see the composition of Spitsbergen most clearly. These are volcanic rocks, more precisely porphyry or porphyrite rocks. The surrounding soil is characterized by loess and sandy loess, which is covered by parabraunerde at higher altitudes.
