St. Pankratius in Mötzlich - history and architecture

The Romanesque church of the former Slavic settlement of Mötzlich is located on an old cemetery with baroque tombstones. It was first mentioned in a document in 1125, was dedicated to St. Pankratius and is the oldest building in town.

Along with Mamertus, Servatius and Bonifatius, Pankratius is one of the "strict gentlemen" who are popularly known as Ice Saints.

The barrel vault from the 12th century is also partially preserved. The central pillar with corner columns and leaf capitals in the middle of two arcades between the nave and the tower also dates from this period, but it was renovated in Romanesque forms in 1897/1898. The nave was lengthened and received a round apse and sacristy.

The galleries and the organ were installed around 1900. The church windows with stained glass also date from around the turn of the century. The stained windows depict Christ and the apostles Thomas and Matthew. A tombstone with a portrait of a knight from the 16th century is set into the east wall.
