“Marienberg Fortress ... Schönborntor, 1649 ... D-6-63-000-317”

The Schönborntor leads between the bastions "Wer da?" and "Caesar" from the north to the castle grounds. It is named after Johann Philipp von Schönborn and bears his coat of arms on both sides in the gate gable, while it is held on the inside by an angel and shows the year 1649. Both gate gables are kept very simple. The gate passage of the Schönborntor is clearly curved - this should make it impossible to shoot through the closed gates, bullets would have ricocheted off the wall. At the end of the passage there is an old guard room on the right. This gate used to have a bascule bridge on the outside that led over a ditch about as wide as the green strip to the right. The iron rollers over which the ropes or chains ran are still preserved (see Neutor for a description of the function), the bridge cellar and the ditch have been filled in the meantime. The gate also had a portcullis, the guide of which can still be seen. An opening in the roof vault provided light and sufficient ventilation, as well as the extraction of smoke

The whole fortress is a good excursion destination. And next door is the LGS1990 park, which almost reaches the "old Main Bridge".
