In 1966, more than 1,000 gold coins from the fifteenth, sixteenth, and seventeenth centuries were found in a leek field on Dorpsstraat in Serooskerke. The coins were auctioned in November 1966 at the Jacques Schulman auction house in Amsterdam. The proceeds: 645,940 guilders (293,115 euros). Half went to the finders, the other to the municipality. With its share, the municipality built a medical center and an outdoor swimming pool in Serooskerke, aptly named De Goudvijver (The Gold Pond), which still exists today.
