The largest and most important drainage system on the right bank of the Weser. Built between 1984 and 1987. Anyone interested in historical information (like me) should read the information panels. A site steeped in history that has had a major impact on the settlement of eastern Bremen over the past 100 years!

On September 10, 1856, the Bremen Senate passed the resolution to drain the entire Blockland and Hollerland area using steam power. The drainage facility was built on the Waller Siel, which was moved back a few meters for this purpose. The feeding ditch “Alter Deich” was expanded into a machine fleet and connected to the mouth of the Waller Fleet into the Kleine Wümme by a cross canal. Since then, most of the water from the marsh areas east of the Bremen Dune has been channeled through this fleet of machines.

Some areas of the block land had previously been under water so often and for so long that there was no longer any grass there. It took up to ten years of consistent drainage before they could be farmed again.

Due to drainage, the soil level in the block land fell by 10 cm in the first seventy years. Over time you realized that you weren't just allowed to drain. Even before nature conservation was one of the tasks of the dike association, water began to be supplied to Hollerland and Blockland in the winter months so that undesirable substances from the groundwater were not pushed into the vegetation layer from below.

This is where the machine fleet begins.
