Piazza Vecchia and Contarini Fountain

Against the backdrop of the Piazza Vecchia stands the Palazzo della Ragione and the Palazzo del Podestà.
The Palazzo della Ragione was the former seat of Bergamo's municipality, and the entire structure underwent numerous modifications; today, the Palazzo della Ragione houses the Fresco Museum, in the Sala delle Capriate. On the right side is the "Scalone dei Giuristi."To the side stands the Palazzo del Podestà, also known as the Palazzo dei Giuristi, as the Podestà also administered justice. Today, it houses the Museo del Cinquecento (Museum of the 16th Century).Along the Scalone dei Giuristi, which ascends 46 steps, are ancient tombstones.And what is now known as the "Campanone" (Big Bell), in 1500, was called the "Turris Nova" and housed the prisons serving the Palazzo dei Giuristi, shops, and a cistern.

Piazza Vecchia is considered the "Renaissance salon" where all the medieval streets of the upper town converge. At the center of the square is the Contarini Fountain, the main meeting place for those who live in or visit the city. The square is home to important historic buildings, such as the Angelo Mai Civic Library inside the Palazzo Nuovo, and the Palazzo della Ragione, beneath which stands an ancient sundial built in the 18th century. At 12:00 p.m. (solar time), the ray filtering through the hole in the shield hanging from the arches indicates the date and the zodiac sign. Piazza Vecchia also features the Campanone, as the locals call the Civic Tower, which tolls 100 times every 10 p.m. to announce the closing of the gates to Bergamo Alta.
