It is a former gravel pit that was left to its own devices after the gravel removal was completed. Flora and fauna were able to resettle - largely undisturbed by human intervention. The area is now a nature reserve and is looked after by NABU (German Nature Conservation Association). "Once a crater in the landscape for extracting raw materials - today an important nature reserve and habitat for many rare animals and plants. The former Dünstekoven gravel pit is one of the main projects of NABU Bonn." it says on their website.
In two places, hikers can climb from the path to a specially designed viewing point and thus gain insights into the area that is closed to visitors. This point is the observation pulpit on the west side.

The gravel pit Dünstekoven, west of Bonn, has numerous sand and gravel hills, whose steep walls are ideal nesting places for insects. There are some ponds with reed beds and small bodies of water that do not carry water during dry periods.
Tree frogs, agile frogs, natterjack toads and green toads live in the wetter areas. Little grebe, teal, shoveler, little ringed plover and sand martin can also be observed on and around the ponds. The shy owl, on the other hand, will hardly show up. But especially during the mating season, its characteristic "u-hu" can be heard in the gravel pit.

Wheatears, Stonechats, Reed Warblers, Meadow Pipits, Red-backed Shrikes and Woodlarks are some of the numerous songbirds in the area. Sometimes one of the most colorful birds in Europe shows up: the bee-eater. With its bright blue chest and corn-yellow throat, it looks almost like a guest from the tropics.
