Quite a few fields in the Upper Palatinate are rich in stones, and so are the farmers who work the soil. The stones have to be laboriously picked out of the field every year, and the piles of stones are getting bigger and bigger.

But these piles of stones have an important ecological function: they provide shelter for birds, slowworms, lizards, toads and beetles.

Hiking

Shortly before reaching station 12, there is another beautiful view of the landscape. Both the western foothills, Franconian Line, Armesberg and Fichtelgebirge can be seen from here. At station 12 there is a brief reference to the "renewable stones" in the Upper Palatinate.
