On the east bank of a river, three kilometers from the mountain village of Nikitari, is the small church of Panagia Asinou, dedicated to the virgin of 'Phorbia'. The UNESCO World Heritage Site houses some of the best Byzantine murals in Cyprus dating from the 12th to 17th centuries. The additional name "Forvia" is probably due to the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae) growing here in large quantities.

The church was built in 1099 as a convent church with the help of the Magistro Nikephoros Ischyrios (the Magistro's title was that of a high official or judge in Byzantine times). The monk Nikolaos later became the Magistro. The monastery was operated until the end of the 18th century and then abandoned.

The church consists of two parts: the domed nave and the inner church vestibule (the so-called narthex), which was only added in the second half of the 12th century. Also from the 12th century is the steeply sloping wooden roof covered with flat tiles, which offered the church protection from the weather. Unfortunately, none of the other monastery buildings can be seen today.

The murals inside the church date from the period between the 12th and 17th centuries and reflect the art of Constantinople, the supposed birthplace of the artist.

From the outside very inconspicuous. From the inside, however, very nice
