The exterior appearance of these churches, with their low-slung shingle roofs, usually made of wood and lacking a bell tower, is reminiscent of barns, which led to the designation of this type of building as a barn-roof church. Some churches had these roofs from the beginning, such as the Panagia tis Asinou near Nikitari, while others were added later, such as the church of Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis near Kakopetria. About half of the 61 churches described by Andreas and Judith A. Stylianou in their seminal work on painted churches in Cyprus belong to the barn-roof church type.
