The Kortrijkse Schouwburg is just about the largest performing arts center in South West Flanders. The building dates from 1920 and is conceived as a 'théâtre à l'italienne'. More than 800 spectators watch from a spacious ground floor and three balconies at an immense frame in which the stage is contained.

At the beginning of 2000, the Kortrijkse Schouwburg was restored. The hall regained its former glory, but now in a contemporary design. Fuchsia red, bright orange and deep gray determine the atmosphere. An outstanding eye-catcher is a beautiful glass dome by the French-Algerian artist Alberola. A wondrous zodiac immediately attracts the attention of the beholder. It leaves the outside world behind, swept along by the fantastic medium called theatre.

The theater is the largest room in the complex. In the same building you will also find the ballet hall, the arena theatre, the downstairs gallery and the foyer.

The Kortrijk Theater was designed by Jan Robert Vanhoenacker in a neo-Renaissance style. The facade of the building dominates the Schouwburgplein and is surrounded by several patrician houses in the same style. Originally, the facade also harmonized with the opposite sixteenth-century Great Halls, which were destroyed during the bombing of July 21, 1944.

The complex contains a large theater hall, a foyer, the Arena Theater, the Lower Gallery, a ballet hall, rehearsal rooms and a cafeteria. The theater hall is the largest room in the building and can accommodate more than 800 spectators. The Arena Theater is a flat-floor theater with an extendable stand and is used for smaller theater and operetta performances, lectures and receptions. The foyer is located between the large theater hall and the Arena Theater. The Benedengalerie is accessible via Hazelaarstraat and houses an exhibition space for contemporary visual art. Since the end of February 2024, the theater has been partly hidden behind a palisade for very thorough renovation work that is expected to be completed in the spring of 2026.
