Chessboard stones with their mostly black and white squares are a rare architectural decoration on the outer walls of medieval late Romanesque and early Gothic fieldstone churches. They were preferably placed in the entrance area or on the wall corners of the apse, chancel, nave and tower so that they were clearly visible. The Danish and German churches with checkerboard stones date from the same period and in both areas it must be assumed that the stones were associated with church building.

50 years after its destruction at the end of the Second World War, Fürstenwalde Cathedral was returned to its intended use on October 31, 1995. The outer shell was restored in 1965, but it took another 30 years until the interior, once its rubble was cleared, was usable again as a place of worship and community center.
