The building opposite the church was the village inn of Groot-Gelmen until 1972. This inn was mainly used by travelers before the construction of the Luikersteenweg, which took place from 1715-1740. Travelers from Sint-Truiden to Liège then also passed through Groot-Gelmen via country roads. The T-shaped building dates from 1656. Parallel to the street was the inn, and perpendicular to it was the house. In 1991, the building was classified as a monument, and its surroundings as a protected village view. It was restored and reopened in 2008 as a café and brasserie.
