With its more than 500 years of history, this 'royal backyard' is one of the oldest coniferous forests in the Netherlands and, after the Wouwse Plantage, the oldest cultural forest in our country. Count Hendrik III of Nassau had the forest planted in 1515 with seed from the Scots pine from Nuremberg, Germany. The Mastbos was a production forest. The wood was used in the renovation of Breda Castle, for the Spanish fleet and later for the masts of VOC ships. The Nassau also used it as a hunting ground.
