The barge, painstakingly restored in 1991, was built in 1897 and for many years plied the trade between Hamburg and Buxtehude as a cargo vessel. The flat-bottomed ship, with its retractable leeboards, can navigate the ebb and flow of the tides and, thanks to its collapsible mast, can pass under fixed bridges. Today, it serves as a reminder of the bustling activity of the Hanseatic city, when barges like this one would dock at the mill to have their cargo of grain ground.

The Margareta is a Giek-Ewer with a berth in the Fleth in front of the Flethmühle in Buxtehude. The ship was launched on May 11, 1897.

The ship and crew experienced eventful times, both good and bad. The vessel was repeatedly rebuilt to accommodate its various uses. In 1973, the barge was removed from the inland waterway register because it was converted into a ferry landing and anchored on the Elbe island of Lühesand.

Through the initiative of master carpenter Ewald Martens, the "Altstadt Buxtehude e.V." (Buxtehude Old Town Association) acquired the barge "Margareta." On May 25, 1987, towed by the barge "Plummslucker," the barge "Margareta" returned to its home port of Buxtehude after a 37-year absence.
