Countess Mathilde, who was a widow, accidentally dropped her wedding ring in the source of the valley, she begged God for help and it was not long before a trout came up with the precious ring in its mouth. Mathilde then exclaimed this is really a golden valley! (Orval, val d'or means golden valley) and she decided out of gratitude to found a monastery in this blessed place.
