The design that architectural firm ZJA supplied for the bicycle bridge is based on two basic ideas. Firstly, the bridge establishes a functional and visual connection with the center of Wetteren, which is mainly dominated by the St. Gertudis Church with its strikingly high central nave and 65 meter high tower. And secondly, that the river itself, which flows in slow, graceful curves through the landscape at Wetteren, remains as spacious and free as possible.

This resulted in a steel cable-stayed bridge, with an almost 50-meter-high pylon, which leans slightly backwards in the bend of the river like a white shadow of the church tower and holds the bridge deck upright with four robust cables. The driveway to the bridge is long, makes a wide bend and thus offers a beautiful view of the rural area, the river and Wetteren. Immediately from the Overschelde bank, the spatial experience of being taken seven meters above the river and quays to the market square and the church dominates.
