Not a splendid piece, but (formerly) a beam cross made from two simple square timbers with a gold-plated front part.

Bernkastel local history researcher Josef Dillinger tells us that not too many years ago a Bernkastel carpenter from the suburbs placed the Golden Cross on the mountain ridge. When this craftsman got old, he gave up his job and made the cross from his workbench, which he probably did in fulfillment of a promise made at the time of need.

In the meantime, the still simple cross seems to have been replaced by a simple metal construction. The cross looks best from the ascent to the opposite Olympus from the Tinkel Chapel, e.g. from the Stone Cross.

This rock is called the Golden Cross and is located above Bernkastel towards Longkamp. Lovely view!

"[...] In the vicinity of this chapel, hilltop follows hilltop: the slopes fall steeply down to the country road and the Tiefenbach. Torrents, which formed after heavy rains, have furrowed the slopes and the ground, including stones and rubble carried down into the valley; the highest peaks of the mountains soar bare into the blue of the sky.

From one, the "Golden Cross" shines far into the area. It is not a magnificent piece, but a cross made of two simple pieces of squared timber with a gilded front part. When you see it, you immediately think of the effort it may have cost to set it up there on the dizzying mountain wall. We do not know when it was erected or by whom; even legend has not taken possession of the cross, except in the following short account:

Years ago, the Bernkastel local historian Josef Dillinger told me that the Golden Cross was placed on the mountain ridge by a Bernkastel carpenter from the suburbs not too many years ago. When this craftsman had come of age, he gave up his profession and made the cross out of his workbench, which he probably did in fulfillment of a promise made in times of need. "
