This splendid building is situated at the intersection of the provinces of Florence, Pisa and Siena,, on one of the branches of the Via Francigena, which Sigerico, Archbishop of Canterbury, walked between 990 and 994, on his return trip from Rome back to England.

The parish church was the XX leg (Mansio) of the English prelate; in whose report is referred to as Sancte Maria Glan, that is Santa Maria a Chianni.

In the historic rooms adjacent to the church there is the excellent hostel "Sigerico", restored a few years ago to accommodate the pilgrims who walk the Via Francigena.

The exterior of the church, in yellow sandstone, is divided into three orders: the lower one houses a large portal, in the other two the austere facade is embellished with arches and columns.

Inside there is a central nave flanked by two side aisles with columns supporting capitals all different from each other.

Santa Maria in Chianni is an important historical site located along the Via Francigena, an ancient pilgrimage route that runs from Canterbury in England to Rome.

The Pieve di Santa Maria in Chianni is one of the most important examples of late Romanesque architecture in Tuscany. It is located a short distance from the historic center of Gambassi Terme. Despite the centuries and the restoration works that have taken place over time, the church still maintains an appearance similar to the facade of the Cathedral of Volterra.

The church is remembered by Sigeric, the Archbishop of Canterbury, at the end of the 10th century, as the twentieth section of his long journey along the Via Francigena. The facade of the church, made of yellow sandstone, contrasts with the surrounding landscape.
