Houwingaham (also Houwingeham) is a lost medieval peat reclamation settlement in the former Reiderland. The settlement was abandoned after the Dollard floods in the early sixteenth century. The earliest mention of Houwingaham dates from 1325. The name was still known in the seventeenth century. In 1628 they wanted to give the new redoubt on the German border the name of Houwingaham, but Langakkerschans (today known as Bad Nieuweschans) was chosen. The medieval settlement of Houwingaham was moved to the more southerly settlements of Hamdijk and Den Ham in the Kerspel Bellingwolde.
