LOCK COMPLEX PLASSENDALE
During the 17th century, the Ghent-Oostende and Oudenburg-Nieuwpoort canals were dug. The connection of these two canals took place in the Plassendale district. Due to different sea currents, two locks had to be built, one of which was later moved to the Slijkens district, closer to Ostend. The cute Spanish toll house along the Vaartdijk-Zuid is a reminder of the rich past of the district, which was once a Spanish fort. This protected village view is an oasis of peace and an ideal stop for a bite to eat. The property is located close to the nature reserve 'De Zwaanhoek' and is a busy junction of cycling routes. You can also enjoy fishing along the canals. Pleasure boats can moor there.
