Location: Oudenburg, Oostende, West Flanders, Flanders, Belgium
Oudenburg is located on the border of De Polders and the sandy region.
Like Tongeren, the city originated from a Roman settlement. Between 180 and 250 AD. the castellum was built and the civilian settlement converted into a military fortification. This happened on a headland that jutted out into the swampy coastal area. The castellum was part of a series of fortresses along the North Sea.
