The hospital and the church of St. Elisabeth were founded in 1338 by Hermann von Treffurt and Spangenberg as a hospital and are still preserved today as a unique medieval welfare institution.
The chapel is a single-nave Gothic building with incomplete frescoes depicting the Carrying of the Cross. In the 5/8 choir there are sculptural interesting tombstones.
Its namesake is Saint Elizabeth of Thuringia (1207 - 1231). On the occasion of her 800th birthday in 2007, several exhibitions in Germany commemorated the Landgravine. One was able to remain in Spangenberg, so that the beautifully designed picture and text panels about her life and work can be viewed as a permanent exhibition in an adjoining room of the small church and in the hallway and stairwell area of the hospital building.
