Barrows on Kammweg and a former large Bronze Age burial mound on Kasselmann's Esch prove a prehistoric settlement in the environment of the Borgberg, which is first mentioned in documents in 1553 (1553 "Buerberg", 1595 "Borgberg"). Medieval depletion by logging, excessive grazing and plagmatism destroys the forests; Sandstone is extracted in quarries (eg for the Hagener church and the cathedral in Osnabrück).
