The Basilica and the Abbey of Saint-Martin de Tours in Tours, as the tomb of St. Martin of Tours, was one of the most important Christian pilgrimage sites for more than a millennium. In the 18th century, Saint-Martin's basilica and abbey declined, and were largely destroyed during the French Revolution. As remains are preserved until today only two towers from the 11th to 13th century - the so-called Tour Charlemagne (1928 partially collapsed and rebuilt) and the Tour de l'Horloge. Incidentally, instead of the original buildings now runs the Rue des Halles.

The Charlemagne Tower, the only remnant of an old basilica dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, is an imposing structure when one walks through the surrounding streets.
